This is the single most common question we get asked in-store, so it's worth answering properly.
Natural crystals
Natural crystals form underground over thousands to millions of years, with colour coming from trace minerals present during formation of iron in amethyst, chromium in emerald, and so on. No two natural stones are perfectly identical; you'll see subtle variation in tone, clarity, and inclusions from piece to piece.
Dyed or treated crystals
Dyed or treated crystals are usually a naturally colourless or pale stone (often quartz or agate) that's been artificially coloured to mimic a rarer variety. This isn't automatically fake as some treatments are industry-standard and disclosed, but it does mean the stone's colour has nothing to do with its natural mineral composition, and the price should reflect that.
A few honest tells
- Unnaturally uniform, saturated colour across an entire batch is a red flag as nature rarely produces that kind of consistency.
- Colour concentrated in cracks or surface pores (rather than throughout the stone) often indicates dye.
- If a rare colour is suspiciously cheap and abundant, ask.
